Athletes to be exempt from physical education

Megan McCormack | Staff Writer Mason City Schools’ Board of Education approved a new policy during the January 25 meeting that exempts certain students from earning physical education credit beginning in the 2011-2012 school year. Students who participate in interscholastic, school-sponsored, athletics, marching band or cheerleading will be allowed to graduate without taking physical education.

Comets’ hot start has team in GMC title race

Joseph Spencer | Staff Writer The boys’ varsity basketball team is in shape to win the GMC, with an 8-1 record going into the bulk of their GMC schedule, according to senior Parker Raffel. They also lead the league in points scored against and this stingy defense is the reason for much of the team’s success, according to Raffel.

Joseph Spencer | Staff Writer Last year, Mason boys’ swimming finished 2nd in the GMC after winning the GMC the two years before.  This year, the team looks to return back to the top of pool after a disappointing finish from last year, according to coach Mark Sullivan.

The Comets look forward to the chance to get back to the state tournament like they did the year before, when they sent six wrestlers, according to head coach Craig Murnan, who said he is excited this year with his unique team.

James Nosek | Staff Writer The Mason varsity girls’ bowling team has started out its current season with an undefeated record of 2-0. They have been lead by sophomore Lexy Benjamin, who has an average score of 183 in the two matches they have played. The 183 average is fifth in the GMC Conference.
