Comets outlast Firebirds 43-41

Defense was the story in Lakota on Friday, January 10th as the Comets defeated Lakota West with a score of 43-41. Going into the 4th quarter down by 10, it didn’t look like the Comets would be able to win the match-up. The more surprising story was not the score but the point total of the second leading scorer on the Firebirds, Carter Combs, who only had three points courtesy of his defender, junior Matt Smith.

Fast-forward to the final minute of the game. Smith got a fast-break lay-up and brought the score to 42-41. The Comets got the ball back from the Firebirds and Alec Dardis was immediately fouled by Tate Fishman, where Dardis made one of two free throws, bringing the score to 43-41. Fishman then got the inbound pass and was fouled by Smith, who then fouled out, and was sent to the line for a one and one. He then missed his free throw and the Comets dribbled the clock down to 5.4 seconds left in the game. The Firebirds used a timeout to draw up a play, but it was shut down by the Comets when Mitchell Greer got a game ending steal to finish it off. The Comets will like to stay undefeated in 2020 as they face Oak Hills at home Tuesday, January 14.
