Last winter, the girls’ gymnastics team made it State for the first time in Mason history. This season the girls are looking for a repeat appearance, according to senior Olivia Bergesen.
“I really hope that we make it to State again this year; we made it last year for the first time ever, and that was a lot of fun. We had a great team and we have a lot of the same girls returning this year,” Bergesen said.
Despite the fact that the team has lost some talent from last season, Bergesen said she still thinks the team will be strong.
“We lost a couple of good seniors, but we gained a couple good freshmen,” Bergesen said. “The team will still be strong and I think that the freshmen will do a good job replacing those seniors.”
According to head coach Kelly Wones, she is looking to her upperclassmen to lead the way to State.
“We have four seniors and five juniors and they’ve been here a while, so they should take leadership roles and help the underclassmen if they need anything,” Wones said.
Wones said that this year the team is well-rounded in every event.
“Last year we had a couple stand-outs who really helped our score, but this year the team is good in every event,” Wones said. “We can make it to State by being a team and not just a few stand-out gymnasts.”
Bergesen said although the team will be strong, it is more focused on having fun if the team makes it to State, instead of focusing on winning.
“There are a lot of really competitive teams at the State gymnastics meet,” Bergesen said. “But just making it to State is really fun so I hope that we’ll have the chance to experience that feeling again and hopefully the freshmen will be able to experience that feeling for the first time.”
