PREVIEW: Girls’ bowling

The Mason varsity girls’ bowling team has started out its current season with an undefeated record of 2-0. They have been lead by sophomore Lexy Benjamin, who has an average score of 183 in the two matches they have played. The 183 average is fifth in the GMC Conference.

Last year, the Comets finished sixth in the GMC with an overall record of 8-8. Returning as the only senior on the team this year, Shelbie Gardner said that overall, last year was successful for the team.

“We really worked together as team [last year],” Gardner said. “We got a bunch of freshmen and sophomores [to join the team last year], and they did great.”

For the 2010-2011 season, some key returning players include sophomores Abigail Johnson, Rachel Smith, Sam Niesz and Emily Harrison. Last year, Harrison had the best average (159.4 points) for the Comets, and was rated just outside the top 20 in the GMC.

Garnder said she has seen great things from Smith and Harrison.

“This year Smith is doing really well, [as is] Harrison,” Garnder said. “Compared to last year, both [are improving] and [scoring better] this season [already].”

With Gardner being the only senior on the team this year, she said that she has to step up into a leadership role.

“I feel I have to help the freshmen and the sophomores,” Gardner said. “I [want to help them] understand the game and teach them different ways of bowling.”

A team to watch out for this year in the GMC is Fairfield, according to Gardner. They finished last season 11-5, and so far this year, they have won their season opener.

Overall this season, the team would like to win as many matches as possible, but the season is about fun, according to Gardner.

“Mainly we just focus on having fun,” Gardner said. “We don’t really think of [bowling for Mason] as a competitive sport; it is more about [having a good time] and hanging out with friends.”
