PREVIEW: Boys’ swimming

Last year, Mason boys’ swimming finished 2nd in the GMC after winning the GMC the two years before.  This year, the team looks to return back to the top of pool after a disappointing finish from last year, according to coach Mark Sullivan.

“We got second place in the league [last year],” said Sullivan.  “Basically, we want to get it back.  We had won it the last three years and losing last year was a disappointment to the program and the coaches.  We have to try to regain the championship.”

As Mason goes for the league title, it will take a true team effort to achieve the goal, but this goal is not out of reach.  This is due to the multiple strong swimmers that the team will be bringing back this year.  The team looks to be led by last year’s district qualifiers, especially the seniors according to Coach Sullivan.

“5 seniors that were district qualifiers last year are Tiko Nelson, George Skoufalous, Narek Manukyan, Caleb Warwick and Brain Wunderle,” Sullivan said.  “Also, juniors Justin Kolwyck, Kevin Feng and Brad Lebling, as well as sophomore Eric Chen.  [As] for diving, sophomore Sean Sargent [qualified]. These swimmers will lead us during the season.”

According to OHSAA.org, Chen, Wunderle and Lebling also qualified for the State meet last year in the 400 meter freestyle relay.
